1. Status of this document
MeetYa is an AI entertainment service. Characters are generated by AI. They are not people, they are not therapists, and they cannot provide crisis care.
This document describes the protocol we maintain to prevent our characters from producing content related to suicidal ideation, suicide or self-harm, and to refer users to crisis services when they express such ideation. We publish it because transparency is a legal requirement in California and, more importantly, because a user in distress deserves to know exactly what our system will and will not do.
2. Who this is for
This protocol applies to every MeetYa user. It governs both the characters themselves and the surrounding product surfaces — notifications, community features and support channels.
3. Our commitments
What we commit to
- Characters never role-play crisis. No character will narrate, encourage, instruct on, or otherwise engage with self-harm, suicide or a decision about either.
- We surface crisis resources. Where a user expresses suicidal ideation or self-harm, we display resources appropriate to their region, inside the conversation rather than behind a link.
- We do not suppress that display. Crisis resources are never deprioritised, hidden, rate-limited, or replaced with advertising or upsells.
- We escalate to humans. Signals judged serious are routed to trained reviewers, not left to an automated filter.
- We tell you it's AI. Users are told they are talking to an AI at the start of a conversation and reminded during long sessions.
4. How detection works
We use a layered approach:
- Automated screening. Incoming and generated content is screened for indicators of suicidal ideation, self-harm and related crises.
- Context, not just keywords. Detection considers surrounding context, because crisis language also appears in ordinary storytelling.
- Human review. Escalated cases are reviewed by trained staff.
- User reports. Anyone can report a conversation; reports are triaged with crisis content prioritised.
We do not claim detection is perfect. It is a system with false negatives and false positives, and we tune it toward over-surfacing help: a user who sees resources they did not need is a much smaller harm than one who needed them and did not see them.
5. What a user sees
When crisis content is detected, in this order:
- The character stops engaging. In-character romantic or narrative replies to the crisis content cease.
- Help is displayed immediately, above the conversation — not behind a link, not after a delay.
- The conversation is flagged for human review where the signal is serious.
- Nothing is upsold. No subscription prompt, credit prompt or recommendation is shown in place of the resources.
6. Hard prohibitions
The following are prohibited and enforced, with no exceptions:
- Content sexualising minors in any form — removed, account terminated, and reported to the relevant authority.
- Content depicting, encouraging or providing instruction for suicide or self-harm.
- Content depicting real, identifiable individuals in sexual or intimate contexts.
- Content promoting violence, terrorism or abuse.
Where a disclosure involves a credible threat of imminent physical harm to an identifiable person, we may escalate to the appropriate authority as permitted by law and our Privacy Policy.
7. Age assurance
MeetYa is 18+. We require age confirmation at sign-up and apply additional checks where signals suggest an underage user. If we determine an account belongs to a minor, we terminate it and delete the associated data. We continue to invest in stronger age assurance, and we do not consider self-declared age alone to be sufficient at scale.
8. Limits we state honestly
- We are not a medical provider and are not subject to clinical duties of care.
- We cannot guarantee detection. Automated systems miss things.
- We do not contact emergency services on your behalf except in the narrow circumstances described in section 6, and we do not have reliable access to your real-world location or identity.
- A character's words are generated text, not a professional assessment, and not a promise of confidentiality.
9. Reporting
You can report content from any message or profile in the app. For safety matters, email support@meet-ya.com. For privacy and data requests, support@meet-ya.com.
If you are worried about someone else, contact a crisis service in their country — or, if you believe they are in immediate danger, their local emergency number.
